As the New Year begins, many take this time to reflect, or even “reset”. While a reset can certainly be beneficial in some instances, that isn’t always the case. A company’s culture can be one of those instances.

In 1937, a truck driver by the name of Malcolm McLean sat in line at a shipyard, weighting to unload his freight.

He had already spent most of the night driving. It was the day before Thanksgiving, and he was eager to get home to his family. However, he understood the trucking business and the time it takes to unload a typical load onto the boat. He counted the trucks ahead of him and realized that he was going to spend most of the day sitting in his truck, waiting for his freight to be unloaded. Understandably, he was frustrated with this situation.

As I go through my days, I seek out to find examples of good Lean principles. Sometimes the examples jump out at me, sometimes they are a little bit harder to recognize. One that has stuck out to me recently is learning how to make your customers feel valued.

As I approached the bridge, I could see floor trim scattered across the road and a man frantically trying to pick up the splintered fragments as cars zoomed by him. I quickly pulled over to offer my assistance to his plight. He looked at me, shook his head and in an exasperated tone said, “I think I need to go home and get back in bed… it’s been one of those days.”

Facing the Insurmountable

During one of my early kaizens (I was serving as the Kaizen lead under the watchful eye of my sensei), we had uncovered what our team thought was the world’s most unsolvable problem, just slightly smaller than world hunger.

Stop chasing your tail

The plant manager’s face looked dejected and you could feel the tension in the room.

I sat staring at myself on my computer screen as the slow ticking of a clock filled the room. These days we’re all familiar with the awkward feeling of waiting for someone else to show up for a virtual meeting. My client was 10 minutes late for our virtual coaching session. Finally, my reflection onscreen flickered, and she appeared.

September 29, 1998, I remember sitting in my 3rd grade classroom as the teacher wheeled in the A/V cart and turned on the TV. There was a sense of anxiety from my teacher, Mrs. Goode. But at the time, I didn’t understand the significance of what was about to happen.

I overheard the following statement as I was walking through the grocery store:

“Just tell your daughter, life is only about doing things you hate.”

I often order things online that require assembly. And most of the time, the assembly instructions are frustrating and laughable. I end up spreading all the pieces on the floor and attacking assembly like a jigsaw puzzle.

In talking with a client this week, I had a thought I wanted to share with you. I looked it up and couldn’t find a quote so maybe it’s original, but the question is: Are you the sailor or the sailboat? The person I was talking with kept bringing up things that were out of her control or even her influence.
